Darth Vader was played by an English actor (and bodybuilder!) called David Prowse, however the iconic voice was re-dubbed by the stage and film actor James Earl Jones. This voice was deemed more threatening than that of the original actor. David Prowse has a West Country English accent, think English country farmer accent. The West Country is often defined as encompassing the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, and the City of Bristol, UK.
The West Country accent is probably most identified in film as “pirate speech” – cartoon-like “Ooh arr, me ‘earties! For example, movies such as ‘Pirates of the Caribbean, will feature West Country accents.
The film Hot Fuzz was filmed in Wells in Somerset.
Hagrid from the Harry Potter franchise is noted for his distinct West Country accent.
